Fort of São João Baptista

From the Exploration Unit

Here's a cool fort in Portugal I discovered online. How perfect is this??

This place was once a troubled monastery (pirates and bad weather) and was eventually abandoned. Then the king of Portugal was informed that it would be a great place to have a fortress, so he ordered construction on that and in 1678 they finally finished it.

I'm pretty sure this is the foundation of a thousand different environment concept designs for castles, fortresses, and evil lairs. Would love to visit this in person some day.

Here's more info about it: LINK

The Jianqing Huaigu Trail

From the Photography Desk in cooperation with the Office of Environment Design

"THE MOST BEAUTIFUL 28 PATHS IN THE WORLD."

That is according to photographer Masuki Rina who visited the Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area in Taiwan. Seeing it through her eyes is a special treat, however I think there's just an inherent beauty here that must be seen in person. Putting this on my list of places to visit someday.

If you're needing reference for an enchanted forest or lush alien planet or a hideout location, you can do worse than this place. I'm content just looking at these and imagining myself getting lost in there and not minding it one bit.

David Roberts (1796–1864)

From the Department of Creative Bank Accounting, Office of Environment Design

I've been a huge fan of David Roberts since I stumbled on his work in an old book I found at the Greenwich Library one morning about 13 years ago. Since then I've collected a few books of his work, but I recently found some more art of his I hadn't seen. These street scenes of 1800s Europe...maybe Spain?

This is the level of ability I aspire to. Maybe in another 10 years? More images here: LINK
